Hello! My name is Vicki Foster. I began my career as an educator in Bangor and Waterville, Maine and then moved to NY where I taught first grade for several years with a crackerjack team. Shortly after my son was born, our family moved south to Alabama and then back home to Maine. (Originally from The County, I really do love winter.....nothing is as peaceful as a new fallen snow sparkling on a sunny day, skiing by moonlight or the snap of a below zero morning!) I began teaching at Mallett School as a Literacy Specialist in 1997, the same year my son started Kindergarten here. My family was very lucky to be back in the land of four seasons.
In 2004 I trained in the successful intervention program called Reading Recovery. This learning continues to be the best and toughest learning I have ever tackled. Reading Recovery has changed my teaching and my students learning and continues to do so every lesson and every day. Helping children experience the joy of reading is rewarding and actually beyond words!
Happy Reading to all!
Hi , My name is Sharri Kapiloff. I have been teaching at Mallett School since 2000. I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education in 1984 then complimented that with a master's degree in literacy in 2009. I started my career in early childhood education as a day care provider. I love what I do. It is the perfect combination of my favorite things, kids and books! I have been a Title I teacher since I started teaching which means that I tutor children who are a little behind. These students are usually not in Special Education.
In 2004 my world as a reader and a teacher of reading was changed when I was trained as a Reading Recovery Teacher. It is a program that is has been well researched and proven to be effective as an intervention that helps first graders catch up to their classmates in reading.
Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my husband of many years, my four daughters, my parents who live next door and my large extended family (to include 5 crazy sisters and one very patient brother!)
I am always happy to share what I do, answer questions and to learn further so please come see me upstairs at Mallett school or send me an e-mail!
Greetings,
My name is Brenda Burnell. I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education from UMF in 1984. I was trained in Reading Recovery in 1996 through the University of Maine at Orono. That training transformed my understanding of emergent literacy learners and teaching of literacy. As a requirement of Reading Recovery, I have been fortunate to be part of Continuing Professional Development with a Reading Recovery teacher leader and other Reading Recovery teachers. This on going training continues to help me hone my teaching for all of my students. In 2006, I earned a Master's Degree in Literacy from Lesley University.
I have been teaching since 1984. My first 12 years were spent in Wilton and Weld Schools as a Special Education teacher. Next, I transferred to the Jay School Department in order to receive Reading Recovery training. I taught Literacy and Reading Recovery for 7 years at Jay Elementary School. Since 2003, I have been teaching Literacy and Reading Recovery at the W. G. Mallett School.
I feel so lucky to work at the W.G. Mallett School. I have the opportunity to spend each day doing two of my favorite things: working with children, and reading books! I share students with an incredible group of dedicated educators, who strive to create a loving and dynamic learning environment for all of our students.
